Putting Together a Great Job Offer
April 13, 2022

A great job offer is bigger than just your formal offer letter. Candidates need to know that you’re enthusiastic about adding them to your team and have plans in place to help them succeed. Looking at the offer process through the candidate’s eyes also helps you determine what benefits and job details will make your open role the best option for them!

1. Make your excitement clear

Timing and delivery go a long way in communicating your interest in a prospective hire. Our team makes sure that your job offer goes out promptly after you’ve settled on your perfect candidate. The last thing you want is for someone who would be a great fit for your team sitting around wondering why they haven’t heard from you! Include a phone call in addition to the formal, written job offer. This way, you can share your excitement with the candidate and offer to go over any questions they may have. Make sure your offer is personalized to the candidate in some way, too. This can be as simple as including some details from the interview process about why they stood out.

2. Compensation is more than money

Candidates today know what they want. It’s important to make sure the wage you offer is aligned with what the job market demands. If you’re at all concerned about the budget you have for an open position, highlight some alternative perks you offer! Pay and benefits are a big factor, but so are company culture and a feeling of fulfillment in the work. Mentorship programs are also really desirable for prospective hires in the veterinary industry. A great job offer should communicate all the ways you plan to invest in your new hire’s personal and professional development.

3. Set your new hire up for success

The first day at a new job can be nerve-wracking for even the most qualified employee! Give some insight into the role’s day-to-day and responsibilities throughout the hiring process. Make responsibilities clear on both sides so your new hire knows what to expect from you and what you expect from them. If your perfect fit needs to relocate, detail what you’re able to do to help with their move. It can also be helpful to give a brief overview of the onboarding process. A little forward thinking on your part shows the candidate that you’re serious about adding them to your team.

4. Follow The Golden Rule

At the end of the day, you and your prospective hire have the same goal—for them to join your team! Treating them like you would want to be treated starts with putting yourself in their shoes. Be honest with them about why they’re a great fit and what you can offer as an employer. Be receptive to their questions or counteroffers and remain open and friendly through the process. Building on the positive relationship that started during the interview is one of the best ways to make your offer compelling to your ideal candidate.
